The Joys of Not Having a Car

I can't decide which standard of transportation I prefer, car or train. I always liked the thought of giving up my car and living in the city where everything can be reached by subway or by foot, but now that I am living it, I realize not having a car affects your life in so many more ways then I imagined. For example, not having a car forces you to seriously consider the weather. Usually, before going anywhere we check the weather forecast  If its cold out, we have to do some major bundling up before leaving, and if it looks like rain, forget it.

The other day I took a chance and tried to beat Mother Nature. Although the sky was cloudy, and I knew rain was in the forecast, I thought I could make it to the grocery store and back before the skies opened up.

WRONG.

Luckily I was prepared with my umbrella, but riding a bicycle with a load of groceries and an umbrella in one hand is NOT easy.


Not to toot my own horn, but I was feeling pretty proud of myself when I got home after this trip. I stayed considerably dry and made it home without dropping anything or running over any Japanese people. There was one left turn that was a pretty close call, but regardless. Those of you who know me know that once upon a time I was not the best bike rider in the world, so this is a big step for me! 


Okonomiyaki

One thing that makes Nathan and I so compatible is that we both love to eat! This also happens to be our favorite part about traveling. Before coming to Japan, the only Japanese food I really knew about was sushi. Turns out, there is so much more! We decided to start sharing all of the amazing cuisine we have been trying. 

Okonomiyaki is one of several dishes that originated here in the Kansai area, but its very popular all throughout Japan. We have heard it referred to as "Osaka soul food." Most restaurants have some version of Okonomiyaki on the menu, and there are many restaurants dedicated entirely to the dish.

Okonomiyaki is basically a pancake infused with seafood and vegetables. I know what you are thinking, but it is way better then it sounds. The fluffy batter is combined with vegetables and various meats or fish. The whole thing is fried on a flat grill into a round pancake like shape.



It is then topped with Okonomiyaki sauce which is like a really sweet and amazing bbq sauce,  and a little bit a mayo. Optional (and delicious) toppings inclue green onions, and fried eggs. The most common ingredients to toss in the mix include any combination or all of the following: bacon, cheese, pork, shrimp, cuddle fish, asparagus, corn, and cabbage.


The finished product is like a work of art. Our favorite place to have Okonomiyaki is Chibo, which I have mentioned in several other posts. However the other night we were invited over to a friends house where we made Okonomiyaki ourselves! Here is our version, hot on the griddle. 




Ours were all veggies with bacon and cheese on top. Ill post the recipe soon. We can't wait to get back home and cook the dish for all of our friends and family!


 

Grocery Shopping in Japan

This is a topic I get asked about pretty frequently. It was also one of my main concerns before coming overseas. I was really concerned that I wouldn't be able to read anything, which would make it very hard to purchase ingredients to cook at home or to read instruction labels. I was also concerned because I knew that Japanese people have very different diets then we do in America, and I wouldn't be able to find "normal food."

Well all of the above turned out to be true. However, grocery shopping here is do-able, and its easier then I expected it to be. Dont get my wrong, their grocery stores are extremely different then ours. Especially in terms of content. I find so many things in Japanese grocery stores that you couldn't dream of finding in America. (and probably wouldn't want to).

At home, going grocery shopping is a mundane, easy, no-thinking activity. I imagine that is how it is for everyone else as well. I jump in my car, drive to the nearest store, grab a cart, fill it with however much I need without considering the weight or size of the load, pay with my credit card, and I am on my way. If I come across something new I want to try, cool! I can read the instructions, the ingredients, and the labels. I can tell if something is on sale. If a product is in a box, or some other type of packaging, no problem because I can read what is inside the box,can,bag, etc.

So all of the easy, no brainer things I just described, imagine the opposite of that. Thats what a trip to the store is like here in Japan. Ill walk you through my typical trip.

The store we shop it is called Mega Deal. It is a lot like Wal-Mart back in the US. A one stop shop for groceries, home goods, cleaning products, supplies, etc.

First stop, grab a shopping cart! Oh wait - they dont have those here. Those tiny baskets we use in America when we are grabbing things for 1 meal - thats how they do all of their shopping.


If you have an extra heavy load, you can get a rolling cart to set your tiny basket in. But don't you dare think about putting groceries in the cart itself. You will be corrected. 


Walking into a Japanese supermarket is goodbye organization, HELLO CHAOS. Not for the easily overwhelmed. 



Some sections are easy, and look similar to back home. Like below, the cheeses, yogurt, and bread section:

And the chips!! We did not think we would find these in Japan.


But some sections are VERY different. Like the dried and packaged foods, which are mostly fish parts, or just actual dried fishes in a bag.

Prepackaged meals AKA bento boxes are a big thing here. A large portion of the grocery store is dedicated to a huge variety of bentos and already prepared food to take out.

Which brings us to the seafood section. I would say this is one of the main differences in an American grocery store and a Japanese grocery store. Obviously fresh fish is huge here, and they have so many more varieties then we do. This is the largest and most popular section in any grocery store. Also consider that this is an ordinary everyday grocery store. This is not a specialty seafood market. If you have an issue with seeing fish or meat in raw form, now may be a good time to stop reading.

Okay, enough fishies. Here is our favorite section: The import section! We can get pasta, pasta sauces, and taco seasoning! 


And finally, the produce. You would think everything would be easy and recognizable here. Wrong! Bonus points to anyone who can tell me what any of the following items are. 



They even buy fruits in veggies in a more raw form then we do. For example, if we want spinach, broccoli, or other greens we have to de-root it. 


Alright, done! About an hour and a half and 50 something dollars later, my small grocery trip is done. 


The cashier rings me up and sends me to the bagging station where you bag up your own groceries. 


Then I load up my bike and I am on my way!

Celebrating St. Patricks Day in Japan

We really didn't think we would be participating in any St. Patty's Day festivities this year, considering most Japanese have never even heard of the Holiday. But, turns out there are several Irish pubs in Osaka who were hosting parties. They had live music, fish and chips, and green beer! (But only Heineken, Guinness, and Kirin.) This place was filled with foreigners. It was by far the most foreigners we have seen our entire time here in Japan. 

We obviously didn't pack with St. Patrick's Day in mind, as you can tell by our thrown together, questionably green attire. Nathan's shirt was kind of greenish-blue and all I could find was a hunter green scarf and green socks, which no one saw under my boots. We basically had everything except normal green. Noted for next year!



I guess that goes to show you can always find a party, no matter what country you're in!
