Osaka/Hong Kong Trip Day 3: Sushi for Breakfast

image
Day 3 started very early with a trip to the Osaka Fish Market. We were on the hunt for the freshest sushi, and with out a doubt we found it. Ill spare everyone the graphic pictures that I took because I realize fish guts aren’t for everyone. (If you’re really interested leave your email in the comment section and Ill be happy to share!) Instead I will share one of the less graphic pictures just so you can get an inkling of what we were walking through.

At one of the very first booths we passed in the fish market, we were handed a spoon. Looking back, it might not have been the best decision, but how often does one find themselves in a fish market in the heart of Japan? Anyways, this guy was pretty entertained by the 3 of us walking through his both and watching him slice this Tuna, so he offered us a bite, and we took it.

So our pursuit of the freshest sushi was completed pretty easily since this tuna was straight off the chopping block. The rest of our stroll was pretty interesting, and at times pretty graphic. We saw tons of fish (obvi) from sliced to whole to breathing to bloody. We saw octupus, (octopi?) squid, sardines, sea urchin, and some of the biggest tuna you could ever imagine. We even saw an entire fish go from squirming to headless in 2.5 seconds. (video footage available!)
We walked to Endo Sushi, located just outside the fish market. I have read about this place on numerous Osaka tourism and foodie blogs. This is THE place to go for fresh, authentic, Japanese sushi. The fish comes straight from the fish market daily and is served in the most traditional sense with no frills added to customers and workers leaving their daily job at the market.

Upon entering we were served (what else) 3 mugs of hot green tea. The menu at Endo is short. Sushi only. You could choose from assortment 1,2,3, or 4. We each chose a different assortment and we were offered Miso Soup which was hot, flavorful, and full of clams.

I had to forego the Salmon Roe, but everything else was wonderful and melt in your mouth fresh. Oh yeah, did I mention this meal took place at about 10 AM? When in Japan, do as the Japanese do, which means fresh fish for breakfast!
